"Lucky Us": A Story of Faith, Family, and Community at St. Thomas More

JUNE 23, 2025

On February 2, parishioners Patrick and Molly Cruitt celebrated a moment they had long anticipated—the baptism of their daughter, Margaret Ann (Maggie), at St. Thomas More. “Patrick and I were thrilled to welcome her into the Church surrounded by friends, family, and members of the St. Thomas More community.”

That day wasn’t just special—it was the realization of a hope they had carried since first arriving at our parish in 2020. “From the day we witnessed our first baptism at St. Thomas More, we looked forward to the day we'd be able to bring our own child into the church here—surrounded by the delightful chatter of other children who bless the holy water, the joyful praise of the choir, and the cheers of celebration and welcome as little ones are lifted into the air. Experiencing that moment for ourselves was everything we'd hoped for and more.”

The Cruitt's journey has included both joy and heartbreak. “We have sat in the pews in moments of joy, triumph and pain. When we experienced an early miscarriage, we brought our pain and sadness to the altar. When I was pregnant, we sat with joyful anticipation—and the community joined in that joy and excitement.” Throughout every season, they have felt the embrace of the community around them.

Now, with Maggie in their arms, they continue to see their faith in new and meaningful ways. “Witnessing our daughter as she encounters Christ for the first time while surrounded by other families of every age and stage is an honor. Seeing the Mass through her eyes encourages me to slow down and notice every sacred detail of our faith and our church.” Even simple moments at Mass reflect something about the joy of our community: “Frequently when we enter a pew, someone nearby will whisper, ‘lucky us!,’ or another (genuine!) gesture of excitement that they get to sit by a cute baby… We join the chorus of laughs, squawks, and cries and know that, whatever stage, mood, or space we are in on that day, we are welcome. If you're not sure whether you'd like to come to Mass next time, I hope you'll know that you have a place next to us. Just know, you'll probably get a pacifier tossed at you!"
