Farewell and Words of Wisdom after 39 Years of Service at STM

BY DEACON TOM DZIK

07/15/2020

As many of you know, eventually everything comes to an end. On June 30, 2020, my ministry as deacon at St. Thomas More ended.

Hannah, our children and I became members of St. Luke's in 1972. Right at the outset, we tried to be active members by lectoring,  being Eucharistic ministers, and serving on various committees. In 1981, I was given the privilege of serving our community as a permanent deacon.

From that date and for the next 39 years, I attempted to be that sign of service that we are all called to by our baptism. In addition to being that sign, I also attempted to actually be of service to our community. Over the years my ministry intersected with yours at many meaningful times in your lives from baptisms, to witnessing marriage, to wake services. I was able to share my thoughts with you through preaching and working with you on various projects and committees.

I believe in life whenever you give you always receive so much more you in return than you give. This certainly was the case for me during my years at St. Luke's/St. Thomas More. I am so grateful for all you have given me during those years. Thank you for letting me be part of your life. It has truly been an honor.

As I leave, I wish you God's blessing and peace in the years ahead. Due to COVID, we are unable to have any kind of gathering at this time, so I guess I will just follow the words of Paul Simon and "just slip out the back Jack".

Deacon Tom Dzik is an iconic figure here at STM. He was deacon here for 39 years, which is incredible. In his younger days, he played on the parish softball team. He did marriage prep and many weddings, funerals, and baptisms. People appreciated his humor, wisdom, and commitment to social justice. I personally will miss Tom, and I know the parish will too. I welcome any parishioners who want to submit comments (or even send cards) thanking Deacon Tom for his many years of service here!
