How to Participate

  • A novena is nine days of prayer and meditation usually to ask God for special prayer requests. Novenas are often used to ask specific saints to pray for us.
  • As a community, we are praying for the virtues of our patron, Saint Thomas More, from June 21-29. We will be celebrating the feast day of St. Thomas More on June 30.
  • All you need to do is say the daily prayers with a sincere heart.
  • Some individuals choose to fast or pray the rosary each day in addition to the daily prayers, but this is optional.
  • The daily novena prayers can be found below, downloaded here, or found in booklets at all church entrances.

Background Info

A novena is an imitation of the Lord’s command to the Apostles when they prayed for 9 days in anticipation of the coming of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus told His disciples to pray together after His ascension into heaven, so they went to an upper room along with the Blessed Virgin Mary, (Acts 1:14) and joined constantly in prayer for nine days.

These nine days of constant prayer by the Apostles at the direction of Jesus led up to Pentecost. This is when the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples as “tongues of fire” (Acts 2:1-4). This pattern of 9 days of prayer is the basis the novenas we pray today.

Day 1

(Virtues: Prudence, Courage)

Lord God, we honor the memory of our Patron Saint, Saint Thomas More. In his earthly life, he was a model of prudence. He never thrust himself rashly into any serious undertaking; instead, he tested the strength of his powers and waited on God’s will in prayer and penance, then boldly carried it out without hesitation.

We ask that you grant to us, through his prayers and intercession, the virtues of prudence, and courage. We also ask that, through his powerful intercession, we may obtain the favors we seek in this novena:

(Pause to bring to mind the spiritual or temporal favor you wish to receive.)

But if what we ask is not for the glory of God and the good of our souls, grant us, we pray, what is more conducive to both. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

V. Pray for us, O Blessed Saint Thomas More.
R. That we may faithfully follow you on the hard road that leads to the narrow gate of eternal life.
