The role of incarceration in our country is hard to escape, from ICE facilities to the Stillwater Prison. The news is full of stories about prisons and incarceration in general, the amount of information makes it hard to separate the reality from the noise, especially when there are so many conflicting viewpoints that often have little to do with the actual experiences of incarcerated people.Join two parishioners with experience working with and advocating for incarcerated people as they discuss the myths and complexities of prison and mass incarceration. If you've ever heard that prison is like an all-expenses-paid vacation, or compared prison work to slavery, this is for you. We'll also discuss how St. Thomas More could best serve our incarcerated siblings. We hope you will join us for a discussion on this important topic—sign up below!
There are 2 million people in the nation’s prisons and jails—a 500% increase over the last 40 years. Changes in sentencing law and policy, not changes in crime rates, explain most of this increase. These trends have resulted in prison overcrowding and fiscal burdens on states to accommodate a rapidly expanding penal system, despite increasing evidence that large-scale incarceration is not an effective means of achieving public safety.
