Join us for a viewing of Martin Scorsese's movie Silence (2016), based on the book by the same name by Shūsaku Endō. Two 17th-century Portuguese missionaries, Father Sebastian Rodrigues (played by Andrew Garfield) and Father Francisco Garupe (Adam Driver), embark on a perilous journey to Japan to find their missing mentor (Liam Neeson). While there, the two men minister to the Christian villagers who worship in secret. If caught by feudal lords or ruling samurai, they must renounce their faith or face a prolonged and agonizing death. (This film is rated R for some disturbing violent content.)
Silence received an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography at the 89th Academy Awards. In addition, the American Film Institute selected Silence as one of its ten Movies of the Year in 2016.
We invite you to come view it with us, even if you haven't read the book. This is a potluck event, so feel free to bring a dish or beverage to share. Please register below to attend!
