The Immigration Committee invites you to join us as we read and discuss the book "Refugee," by Alan Gratz, about three different kids with one common mission:1. Josef is a Jewish boy in 1930s Nazi Germany. With the threat of concentration camps looming, he and his family board a ship bound for the other side of the world.2. Isabel is a Cuban girl in 1994. With riots and unrest plaguing her country, she and her family set out on a raft, hoping to find safety and freedom in America.3. Mahmoud is a Syrian boy in 2015. With his homeland torn apart by violence and destruction, he and his family begin a long trek toward Europe. All three young people will go on harrowing journeys in search of refuge. All will face unimaginable dangers–from drownings to bombings to betrayals. But for each of them, there is always the hope of tomorrow. And although Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud are separated by continents and decades, surprising connections will tie their stories together in the end. (Book description from Alan Gratz website)
While we encourage you to read the book or graphic novel, available at bookstores and libraries, and to join us for our discussion, we believe the discussion will be interesting and valuable even if you haven’t had a chance to read all of the book, or even start it.
There is no fee to attend this book discussion. If you would like to support this effort so that we can continue to offer enriching opportunities like this one, please consider making a donation to our parish community. You may donate online or mail a check to the STM Parish Center. We are extremely grateful for your support!
