Announcing Deacon Fischer's Return!

APRIL 23, 2026

Dear Saint Thomas More Parishioners,

I was ordained as a permanent Deacon in December of 2023. A few months after my ordination, I was assigned to serve as a Deacon at the Church of Saint Patrick in Inver Grove Heights. Recently I was pleased to be offered the opportunity to return to Saint Thomas More and to split my service between here and Saint Francis de Sales in the West 7th neighborhood. I am so happy to be back home at STM and also excited (and a little scared) to have an opportunity to serve a Spanish speaking parish.

As a vibrant and growing community, I know there are many at STM who have joined the community in the past couple years who may not know me. My wife, Maureen, and I have been married almost 38 years. We raised five children in the western suburbs and moved to Saint Paul seven years ago when our big suburban home seemed too big for a couple of empty nesters.

When I entered formation seven years ago I had recently retired from a fulfilling career in the construction industry. Since then I have worked in Catholic elementary schools in a variety of positions, but for the past two years have taught middle school math at Holy Trinity School in South Saint Paul. I have also started working in the Extended Day program here at Saint Thomas More School.

I grew up in a farming community in northeastern South Dakota and continue to maintain strong agricultural and social ties to my home community. However, 42 years of living in the Twin Cities means that this country boy is fully at home in the city, even if my speech is sometimes spiced with a few salty expressions from the farming and construction industries!

I look forward to joining this community on your collective and individual faith journeys - wherever you may happen to be on that path. Paul says it best, “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” -Romans 8:38-39

God bless,
Deacon "Fish" Fischer
