This concert celebrating the life, music, and faith of Mary Lou will feature the musical work of Williams, compositions inspired by her life and work, and biographical talks sharing her story. Music will be performed by the music ministry of St. Thomas More, the Swing Sisterhood Big Band, and community musicians from around the Twin Cities. The concert is free and open to the public.
Williams was a mid-20th century jazz musician performing on piano and composing throughout the United States and Europe. Overwhelmed by the darker side of the jazz scene, she left music and, upon returning to New York, converted to Catholicism. Influenced by Dorothy Day, she began a rigorous prayer life and served those in most need, including opening her home to musicians in recovery. Upon returning to music, she composed a number of sacred musical works, including a jazz Mass.
There is no fee to attend this concert.
