Meet our Pastoral Council: Jessica Pereira

Hello Saint Thomas More Community,

My family and I joined St Thomas More two years ago, drawn by STM’s reputation as a sanctuary parish. The first thing I noticed when we walked in was the giant stained-glass window that says, “Go forth and set the world on fire.” In the chapel, these words were engraved in the stone beside us: “God, give me the grace to work for what I pray for.” Then when mass started, a lay-woman stood on the alter and gave a beautiful reflection on the gospel. I knew that we were in the right place.

Since then, I have loved being involved with the parish’s immigration support ministry. I also love having donuts and chatting after mass. Every. Sunday! Outside of church, I work as a family doctor at a community clinic in St Paul, and I try to keep up with our two kids – Oscar, a 7th grader at Hidden River Middle School, and Simon, a 5th grader at Horace Mann Elementary – and hang out with my husband Edwin. I am thrilled to have the chance to participate in the pastoral council. The Jesuit motto “contemplatives in action” really speaks to me, and I look forward to supporting social justice efforts, family faith formation, and Jesuit values as STM continues to grow.

Sincerely,

Jessie Pereira
