The Saint Thomas More Young Adult Community is comprised of mostly young professionals who have completed some level of graduate school education. We meet every other Wednesday to discuss a litany of topics usually agreed upon at a leadership team meeting prior to starting the next cycle of discussions. The group was formed out of the positive experiences many had with our Lenten small-group retreats in the spring of 2018. Since then, topics have included the tenants of Catholic Social Teaching, popular saints, a book study using the writings of Fr. Jim Martin, SJ, and reading the writings of Pope Francis.
Our typical evening format is, to begin with, a potluck dinner and social and then to discuss the topic at hand afterward. Our leadership team consists of having a staff liaison, a young adult leader, a communications person, someone in charge of socials, someone in charge of service. In addition to the regular biweekly meetings we also have social gatherings and “Theology on Tap” gatherings at a local restaurant. By far, the most popular events every year have been the weekly Advent and Lenten retreats that serve as a link between the young adult community and the larger parish as a whole. They are also where we tend to see the largest numbers of new members join and then become more involved from there.
