Spanish
St. Thomas More students participate in the Spanish program throughout their K-8 experience. Students in kindergarten through second grade are introduced to the language through weekly classes. Grades 3-5 have Spanish twice per week and by middle school the students have class three days per week.
The students are introduced to Spanish early, and through engaging curriculum they learn common phrases, new vocabulary, and eventually new grammatical structures. The K-5 program is action-based, and Spanish language books are used to supplement the oral and verbal vocabulary.
In each class, it is our hope that every student will smile, laugh, listen, move and speak in Spanish. In the elementary program our emphasis is on having fun. In the 4th and 5th grades the students transition to more reading and writing to help prepare them for their middle school Spanish experience.
In grades 6-8 the students complete the curriculum for high school level Spanish 1. It is our hope that by the end of 8th grade, students are prepared to study Spanish 2 in 9th grade. Students will be able to speak and understand basic Spanish, they will learn how to read and write, using and understanding proper grammar and spelling, and they will learn about culture in the Spanish-speaking world.
