Art
Saint Thomas More has a dedicated, full-time art teacher. Our art curriculum covers four distinct disciplines:
- Art Production - Students learn how to use the tools and materials of artists and how to create original, personal artworks using art techniques.
- Art History - Students study art and artists of the past and present for inspiration, as examples of technique and style and as an avenue for understanding cultural, economic, political, social, and religious events and movements.
- Art Criticism - Students describe, interpret, and analyze the properties of works of art.
- Aesthetics - Students consider the nature, meaning, impact and value of art. Over time, students develop the ability to form reflective, educated opinions about works of art.
The art program takes skill and grade level into account through a step-wise curriculum that revisits and builds upon previous skills and ideas. In kindergarten through 5th grade, students are given the opportunity to use several materials through projects that introduce the elements and principles of art.
In the middle school art classes, students use their sketchbooks to brainstorm and experiment before creating finished artworks. Middle school students also complete self-assessments and participate in peer critiques at the end of major studio projects.
It is our hope to instill a love of art in each student and to inspire them to continue learning about the visual arts as they grow
