Works of Charity

St. Thomas More sponsors four ministries focused on the charitable works “foot” of the Two Feet of Love in Action - Dorothy Day Meal Service, Swap Shop, Christmas Toy Giveaway and Advent Giving Tree. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops says that charitable works are our "response to immediate needs and specific situations: feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, caring for and healing the sick, visiting those in prison, etc. We step with the Charitable Works foot when we work to aid or assist others both locally and globally to meet their immediate, short-term needs. Examples include engaging in direct service or providing food, clothing, shelter or monetary assistance to help those in need.

To find our more about a specific ministry, please email justice@morecommunity.org and someone will respond.

Ongoing Ministries
dd-2013aDorothy Day Meal Service

From 10 to 12 volunteers serve an evening meal every 3rd Friday of the month to about 275 guests of Catholic Charities’ Dorothy Day Center in St. Paul. About 40 volunteers, on the rotating roster, prepare the meal beforehand and serve guests as they come through the line. A typical meal served consists of:

• Homemade chili
• Fresh-baked cornbread
• Garden salad
• Chocolate chip cookie

For more information and to volunteer, contact Lisa Welch, ministry chair: justice@morecommunity.org.

STM Free Store

Volunteers staff a “Free Store” offering gently used clothing and housewares to people in need from 1 to 3 pm on the first and thrid Saturdays each month, all year round. The Free Store is held in the basement of St. Thomas More School at 1065 Summit Avenue. Entry is off the alley between Lexington and Oxford Avenues.

Volunteers collect and sort items donated from parishioners and school parents. The Swap Shop also provides new socks and underwear, as well as school supplies, at no charge. It serves 20 to 40 patrons; each guest can take 2 grocery bags of goods. For more information and to volunteer, contact April Thompson, volunteer coordinantor at: stmfreestore@morecommunity.org.

Food Shelf Ministry

We are pleased to be able to donate food to our local food shelves. Some of the items that are: canned vegetables and tuna, soups, boxed pasta and potatoes, cereal, baby food, nutritional shakes, peanut butter and jelly. We want to thank you for your generosity in helping those in need in our local community.

Annual Ministries
Advent Giving Tree

2giving-treeDuring the Advent season, this ministry collects Christmas gifts from parishioners and distributes them to adults and children in need. The Advent Giving Tree works with three St. Paul-based charity organizations, Midwest Special Services, Women’s Advocates, Inc., and Listening House to determine recipients’ needs. Volunteers set up and decorate a small tree in the church with each tag listing a charity’s name and requested gift. Parishioners choose tags, buy gifts, and place the gifts under the tree for distribution before Christmas. For more information and to volunteer, contact K.P. Waite, ministry chairjustice@morecommunity.org.

Christmas Toy Giveaway

child-giftThis ministry collects and distributes hundreds of new and gently used toys, books, stuffed animals, and holiday decorations to low-income families with children each Christmas. Parishioners, school parent volunteers and students help set up, organize, register, supervise and clean up for the “giveaway” held in the STM School Auditorium each December. STM School students play a big part in this effort by donating toys and books to the giveaway. For information and to volunteer, contact Myriam Grady, ministry chair: justice@morecommunity.org.
